Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate is the INCI name for the dipotassium salt of glycyrrhizic acid, one of the major saponins associated with licorice root. Korean references list a current and an older spelling, while papers may use dipotassium glycyrrhizin. These labels refer to the defined salt rather than to a scoop of ground root or a complete botanical extract.
That distinction matters. Licorice extract contains a variable mixture. Glabridin is a separate constituent often discussed in pigmentation research, and glycyrrhetinic acid is another derivative. Sharing a plant origin does not allow their studies, concentrations, or benefits to be exchanged. Following the exact INCI is the simplest defense against an inflated “licorice does everything” claim.
Its practical job in a formula
The salt is water-soluble and can appear in toners, essences, serums, lotions, creams, masks, and other water-containing products. Formulation references describe skin-conditioning and soothing roles. Finished ingredient lists also place it in emulsified creams, showing that a water-soluble supporting ingredient is not limited to toner-like textures.

Industry involvement and the limited formula should also temper confidence. The 0.2% figure describes that study, not a universal target or a do-it-yourself mixing instruction.
Why the emollient research needs a boundary

A newer study evaluated emollients containing dipotassium glycyrrhizin in adults with atopic dermatitis. It can inform interest in moisturizing-product contexts, but the intervention was a complete emollient. Water, lipids, moisturizers, preservatives, and application behavior all contribute, so the result cannot be assigned to this salt alone.
Disease-context research does not turn an ordinary cosmetic into a medicine. Continuing itch, weeping, cracking, or spreading redness needs appropriate assessment. Seeing Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate on a label does not establish a regulated brightening function. If uneven tone is your goal, check the product’s stated function and identify which ingredient supports it. The most direct cosmetic human evidence for this salt concerns stinging in one formula, not a broad whitening outcome.
Choosing between a toner, serum, and cream
Water solubility does not make a toner inherently better. If transient warmth after acids is the concern, a relatively simple serum or lotion with few fragrance materials may be easier to evaluate. When dryness and tightness dominate, the emollient and lipid structure of a cream may matter more than the presence of this single supporting ingredient.
An ingredient list confirms presence but rarely gives concentration, purity, or the final formula’s pH. An undisclosed percentage is not automatically ineffective.
